The European Parliament today passed a strongly worded resolution calling for the European Union to press for Burma to be taken to the International Criminal Court for ‘crimes against humanity’ if it continues to block aid.
The Resolution also stated that sovereignty cannot be allowed to override human rights. It calls on the UK, which has the presidency of the United Nations Security Council, to ensure Burma is put on the agenda of the Council, and that the Council invoke the principle of responsibility to protect. Under this principle aid can be delivered even if the regime does not give consent.
“We welcome this Resolution and call on EU governments to accept the European Parliaments’ demands,” said Zoya Phan, International Coordinator of Burma Campaign UK. “The regime must be held to account for killing thousands of people by blocking aid to them. The generals should be in jail, not at UN donor conferences.”
