UK campaigners back US action at Amerada Hess AGM over Premier Oil investment

May 1, 2002 All News, The Dirty List

To coincide with protests at Amerada Hess’s AGM in the US, the Burma Campaign UK is today calling on supporters to send faxes to Chairman John Hess’s direct number, calling on him to sell Hess’s 25 percent stake in Premier Oil.
“We can’t be there in person but we can make sure they get the message”, says John Jackson, Director of Burma Campaign UK. “We are delighted that Hess are coming under so much pressure in the US. It is making life increasingly difficult for Premier Oil. Premier’s public reputation is already in tatters, soon they will be a pariah in the business community as well.”
Amerada Hess have stated they are ‘re-evaluating’ their investment in Premier Oil.
The Burma Campaign UK expects John Hess will receive hundreds of faxes – titled ‘John Hess, clean up your mess!’ – from the UK and over a dozen other countries. “The pressure will keep piling up until they sell up”, says John Jackson.
Burma Campaign UK has a strong track record of persuading companies to pull out of Burma, including Triumph International, Burton, River Island and BHS.
