Burmese military companies: Products and Brands

The Boycott List is available as a PDF here.

In order to make it easier for embassies, international aid departments, corporations, NGOs and individuals to avoid purchasing goods and services from military companies, we have produced this briefing paper listing the products and brand names owned and used by military companies. This includes wholly owned companies, and joint ventures.

Military owned and controlled companies are an important source of revenue for the Burmese military. Buying goods and services from the military increases their revenue and this revenue is used to fund their operations, building their military capacity. The Burmese military are being investigated for crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court, and have been accused of genocide at an ongoing case at the International Court of Justice.

In September 2019 the United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar published the final update of its report on the economic interests of the military. It mainly detailed alleged subsidiaries or affiliates of the Myanmar Economic Corporation and Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd, two conglomerates owned and controlled by the Burmese military. The report called for sanctions on these companies.

“The implementation of the recommendations in this report will erode the economic base of the military, undercut its obstruction of the reform process, impair its ability to carry out military operations without oversight and thus reduce violations of human rights and international humanitarian law, and serve as a form of accountability in the short-term,” said Mission Chair Marzuki Darusman.

The products and brands listed are mainly from Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd, Myanmar Economic Corporation and Myanmar War Veterans Organisation. We have not been able to obtain information on the economic interests of the military political party, the Union Solidarity and Development Party apart from the as yet undeveloped plot 19 at Thilawa Port Terminal.

This list is as comprehensive as we are able to make it based on information currently available, but we make no claim that every single military product is listed here. We have included some products/brands that we believe are not currently being produced, as in the past there have been temporary shut downs of factories and products/brands have been brought back or relaunched.

We welcome information on errors or omissions.
