The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners’ new report traces the conditions and accounts of junta brutality against detained female political prisoners.
Since the 2021 coup, AAPP’s records show that over 2,100 women who opposed the regime have died, including 40 women who have reportedly died in prisons, police stations and interrogation centers, as a result of torture. There are certainly many more who have lost their lives without anyone knowing.
The report reveals a widespread and systematic policy whereby all political prisoners, including women, are systematically subjected, not only to physical violence, but also psychological and sexual oppression. This deliberate denial of medical treatment, combined with the use of violent repression, constitutes a serious human rights violation that could be considered torture and inhumane treatment under international human rights law.
