NEW BURMA ‘DIRTY LIST’ PUBLISHED AUGUST 20TH 2003
ON AUGUST 2OTH 2003 THE BURMA CAMPAIGN UK WILL BE PUBLISHING AN UPDATED VERSION OF ITS ‘DIRTY LIST’ OF COMPANIES HELPING TO FINANCE BURMA’S MILITARY DICTATORSHIP.
“The Dirty List exposes companies who are directly or indirectly helping to finance one of the most brutal regimes in the world,” says John Jackson, Director of Burma Campaign UK. “Foreign investment can benefit developing countries, but in the case of Burma the opposite is the case. It helps to finance a regime that uses rape, torture and murder to suppress its own people. We want these companies to end their involvement in Burma. They must stop funding this bloody regime.”
Major companies already on the ‘Dirty List’ include British American Tobacco, Total Oil, Suzuki, Hutchison Whampoa and its subsidiaries, and construction firm Kajima, which has contracts with local authorities in the UK.
“Most companies won’t go within a thousand miles of Burma because of the ethical issues involved,” says Jackson. “But a few remain, and we are determined to get them out.”
