Burma Campaign UK condolences on the death of Saw Shwe Lar

February 22, 2013 All News, News Stories

Burma Campaign UK is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Saw Shwe Lar, who died on 18 February 2013, in The Netherlands.

Saw Shwe Lar was one of the 34 Karen and Rakhine freedom fighters who were betrayed by Indian intelligence and unlawfully jailed in 1998, after 6 of their leaders were executed and while the rest were charged with terrorism. Burma Campaign UK helped campaign for their release. Through the UN resettlement program, they resettled in The Netherlands in 2011.

He will be remembered as a brave man in the struggle for justice, for democracy, and for the rights and protection of the ethnic people in Burma.

We would like to express our sincere sympathy and send our condolences to his family, friends and community, the Karen National Community – The Netherlands.
