Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of Burma’s democracy movement, will have spent a total of 5,000 days in detention on Sunday 5th July. Aung San Suu Kyi is currently on trial for breaking the terms of her house arrest, after an American man swam to her house and refused to leave. Her trial resumes on Friday 3rd July.
Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained on three separate occasions. The first was 20th July 1989 – 10th July 1995. The second 23rd September 2000 – 6th May 2002. The third started on 30th May 2003 – present. In March 2009 the UN declared Aung San Suu Kyi’s detention to be illegal under international law and Burmese law.
On Sunday 5th July 2009 the Burmese Community in Oxford will be holding a Burmese cultural event in Oxford Town Hall 12-3pm. There will be traditional food, dancing, and talks on Burma’s culture and history.
Other key dates coming up:
20th July 2009 – 20th anniversary of Aung San Suu Kyi first being placed under house arrest.
8th August 2009 – 21st anniversary of 1988 uprising.
24th October 2009 – Aung San Suu Kyi will reach 14 years in detention (if/when convicted in current trial)
