New Letter Writing Campaign For Political Prisoners

January 21, 2014 All News, News Stories, Political Prisoners

Burma Campaign UK has published a new letter writing guide for political prisoners in Burma. The guide is part of the ‘No Political Prisoner Left Behind’ campaign.

The letter writing guide highlights the cases of political prisoners still in jail who have featured as political prisoners of the month. It gives addresses of political leaders to write to about their cases, and of political prisoners, so that they can receive letters and know that they have not been forgotten.

Thein Sein lied when he promised to free all political prisoners by the end of 2013. Despite the release of high profile political prisoners, hundreds of political prisoners could remain in jail, and more activists are being arrested and jailed. The international community has dropped most sanctions and diplomatic pressure for their release, even though arrests continue, repressive laws remain in place, and political prisoners remain in jail.

Burma Campaign UK supporters are being asked to call for a new independent mechanism to review all possible cases of political prisoners in Burma, and ensure that they are released.

“This letter writing guide is part of our continuing campaign to ensure that the problem of political prisoners is not forgotten, said Wai Hnin, Campaigns Officer at Burma Campaign UK. “We will keep campaigning until every single political prisoner is free.”

The letter writing guide is available here.
