Burmese political exiles demonstrated outside the Chinese Embassy in London today, calling on China to support United Nations Security Council action on Burma.
Peter Gabriel also issued a statement calling on China to use their influence positively: “I am appalled to see the brutality and killing that the military leaders are inflicting on their own people. I fully support the extraordinary bravery of the monks, nuns and ordinary people of Burma and their leader, Aung San Suu Kyi. We are relying on the Chinese, on whom this illegal regime depend, to show the world their true colours”.
The protest and statement came as the UN Envoy to Burma, Ibrahim Gambari, returned to New York following his failed attempt to persuade the regime in Burma to enter into negotiations with the regime. He is expected to brief the Security Council on Friday.
