MPs TELL TOTAL TO GET OUT OF BURMA
On the 10th anniversary of the detention of Aung San Suu Kyi, Vera Baird QC MP and John Bercow MP met with representatives of Total Oil to urge them to withdraw from Burma. They said ‘Total’s investment is propping up a sadistic, hideous regime, providing it with a cloak of respectability, behind which it can continue its brutal oppression of the Burmese people. Total’s presence does nothing to advance the case for democracy in Burma.
Moreover, its harmful influence on the French government is obstructing effective action by the EU and the UN against the military junta. We urge Total to follow the lead of respectable European companies, to value human rights above the pursuit of filthy lucre, and withdraw from Burma’.
