Everyone at Burma Campaign UK was very sad to hear the news that our Patron and friend, Sue Lloyd Roberts has died.
Sue was an absolute force of nature, determined to overcome any obstacles to report from some of the most remote and difficult places in the world. In the 1990s she went undercover to report from Burma at a time when most journalists were unable or unwilling to report from the country.
A Patron of Burma Campaign UK for 15 years, she was always willing to give her time to raise awareness of the situation in the country.
Not for a minute was she fooled by the reform process introduced by President Thein Sein. Covering by-elections in 2012, she was one of the first to report on the warning signs that the reform process was not what it seemed. In the same year she entered Burma illegally to report on human rights violations in Kachin State where the Burmese Army had broken a ceasefire and was targeting civilians.
Sue had hoped to beat her Leukaemia and be well enough to return to Burma for elections due in November.
We will miss Sue terribly, both as a friend and as one of the most incisive journalists to report on Burma.
